This dicotyledonous flower model is an idealised enlarged flower model designed to teach the function of flowers, pollination of angiosperms and germination. The flower has been magnified and 3 petals, 4 sepals and 4 filaments are removable. The ovary and two anthers are cut partly to reveal the inner structures of the dicotyledonous flower, and the ovary is dissected to reveal the 7-celled female gametophyte.
Six pollen grains are mounted on the style. One of them has generated a pollen tube which has penetrated the micropyle. Depicting the condition just prior to double fertilization, the tube nucleus, closely followed by the two sperm cells, can be observed near the apex of the pollen tube. One sperm is destined to fertilize the two polar nuclei forming the nutritive triploid endosperm. The other will fertilize the egg to form the diploid zygote.
This numbered and hand-painted flower model would be ideal as an advanced teaching aid for a botany or biology class.
